A hard drive is where all of
your programs and files are stored. "A hard disk drive
(often shortened as hard disk, hard drive, or HDD) is a
non-volatile storage device that stores digitally
encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic
surfaces. Strictly speaking, "drive" refers to the
motorized mechanical aspect that is distinct from its
medium, such as a tape drive and its tape, or a floppy
disk drive and its floppy disk." Source: wikipedia.com
If you are think about
buying a hard drive, you may wish to consider a few
factors such as brand, size and connection.
This is one time when buying
a brand name makes sense. An HP Hard Drive or an IBM
Hard Drive are well known and have a lot of experience
with the technology. Size is not critical if you are
simply using the computer for data files. It does become
a factor if you plan on storing large video or music
files.
Internal or external drives
is the next decision. Internal drives tend to be less
expensive than external drives. Also take into
consideration the connection you need. Most external
hard drives will use either a USB port or Fireware while
internal drives come with a variety of connections.
Check your manual to see what you need.
Internal Hard Drive
A hard drive is made up of
several spinning platters and a roving head that reads
data that has been magnetically imprinted on the discs.
A hard drive can be partitioned into separate sections,
called 'volumes'. You can create up to 16 different
partitions on a hard drive, each one can be of different
size and format. If that drive is ever compromised you
could loose your data.
External Hard Drive
An external hard drive rests outside the primary
computer in its own box. The box is slightly larger than
the hard drive itself, and will occasionally have its
own cooling fan. A portable hard drive lets you store
data outside of the main computer.
The external drive is connected to your main computer by
a cable which allows the hard drive to exchange data
with the main computer. There most common type of
interface is a USB port.
You can use the external drive to back up or store data
in addition to what is stored on the main computer. So
rather than clogging up you memory with large music or
video files, you could keep these in the external drive
as well as storing sensitive data that you want to keep
an extra copy of.
One of the best features of an external drive is that it
is portable and can be plug into any other computer with
a USB port. You can then access the external drive from
another computer or a laptop wherever you are. This
allows you to transfer data back and forth from the
office to home.
